People have put rendered fat on skin for as long as there have been people and fat.
Tradition is not why it works. Tallow is close in composition to the lipids skin already makes, which is why it spreads thin, absorbs without leaving a film, and gives reactive skin very little to argue with.

Then, the method.
Step one
Start small
Pea-sized for a small area, up to a quarter for larger ones. Tallow is solid at room temperature and melts at body heat, so warm it between your fingertips until it turns to oil.
Step two
Place a dab
Place small dabs where you want them: one under each eye, two on the forehead, one per cheek, one on the chin. Neck takes about five.
Step three
Work it in with intention
Rub the balm in until you are happy with the absorption and the feel. Move with intention. We recommend gua sha, over the face or the body.

Over a fresh self-tanLet the tanner dry a few minutes, then balm straight over the top. The tan develops underneath while the balm sits on the surface, and the finish comes out gold rather than flat.
Under makeup, with a pauseIt can work, but give it a few minutes to settle first, and use less than you think.
What most people get wrong
Damp skin is the whole mechanismTallow does not add water to skin. It slows water leaving. On dry skin there is nothing to hold; on damp skin you are sealing in what is already there.
You have about three minutesThe usual advice is to moisturise within three minutes of washing, while skin is still damp. After that the window has mostly closed.
Tallow goes on lastThinnest to thickest. A water-based serum under the balm gets sealed in. The same serum applied over it cannot get through.
Gua sha does more than move fluidFacial massage shifts fluid, which is why a face looks less puffy afterwards, and that part fades. But a 2025 randomised trial also found measurable changes in facial contour and muscle tone after eight weeks of daily practice, which fluid alone does not explain. What nobody has tested is whether it holds once you stop.
Night is the easy winNothing is layered over it, nothing rubs it off, and you are not putting makeup or SPF on top. Start there before you try it in the morning.

Sourcing is the page people go looking for when they are deciding whether to trust what goes on their face. It should not be hard to find.

The cattle were raised on pasture rather than in feedlots for the majority of their lives.

The tallow is slowly rendered and filtered until it is clean and neutral. Nothing is added at any stage.

Keep it cool and dry
Store the balm away from direct sun and away from heat. Tallow softens as it warms and firms again as it cools, which changes the texture but not the balm itself.
Keep water out of the jar
Use clean, dry fingers. Water introduced into the jar is the one thing that gives microbes somewhere to grow.
Shelf life
Unopened, the balm keeps for eighteen months from the date of manufacture. Once opened, use within twelve months. Rendered tallow is naturally stable and the vitamin E slows oxidation further, so the real signal is your nose: discard the balm if the smell turns sharp or sour, which is how oxidised tallow announces itself.

Does it smell like beef?
Properly rendered and filtered tallow is close to odourless. There is a faint richness when the jar is first opened that fades within a minute of application. Nothing is added to mask it, because masking it would mean adding fragrance.
Is this good for acne-prone skin?
Plenty of people with acne-prone skin use tallow with great results. There are also reports of people who still break out. The truth is that skin varies. Your skin is your truth, and it is the only one that matters.

How long does a jar last?
A pea-sized amount covers the whole face, so a 1 fl oz jar typically lasts two to three months with nightly use. Kept cool and out of direct sun it stays good for roughly 12 to 18 months.
Why is there no preservative?
Preservatives exist to stop microbial growth in water. There is no water in this balm, so there is nothing for microbes to grow in and no microbial preservative is needed. The vitamin E does a different job. It slows the oils going rancid. Keep water out of the jar and use clean fingers.
Can I use it on my body, or on a baby?
It works anywhere you would use a rich balm: hands, elbows, heels. For infants, or for anyone with a diagnosed skin condition, ask your paediatrician or dermatologist first. We are not in a position to advise on that.
